Branding
I have this thing where, when I get interested in something I have this need to understand it from every angle and just need to know practically everything I can possibly find out about it. One of my big things that I really get into and am interested in is branding. Haha this is probably a good thing considering branding is pretty much the entire pie chart of being a graphic designer.
Any way heres some great web sites that are all branding orientated with good info, articles, essays and some of which are also linked into up and running studios with some great portfolios of their own branding work.

Share your world away
Just a thought I would like to share.
It is a common habit for each and every one of us to safe guard our thoughts and ideas that we have, keeping them close to us because were paranoid that someone will steal our idea. In my opinion this creates tunnel vision, which will carry an idea one direction and one direction only. You could have the greatest new idea but by keeping it to yourself you are effectively cutting it off at its legs by not allowing it to be fed by other minds. Not only are you restricting the growth of a possibly great idea but you are restricting your own personal development by effectively running on reserve power which is one day going to run out. Share your ideas with your peers and allow other creative and fresh minds to fuel your idea, talk to people and ask them what they think and what they would do. Hell if you don't like what they have to say you don't need to use their idea but amongst the ideas you don't agree with there will be some gems that will allow your idea to grow and develop.
Stop thinking about the negative - that someone will steal your idea and think of the positive, think... What can my peers minds bring to the table?
So from now on stop hoarding and put your ideas out there. This goes for books, websites, etc as well, share what you find and just wait to see what you get in return.
Check out brandgeek too, sweet links etc all being shared.

Envy
As promised here's some of my work, freshly printed on Friday. The first shirt I have ever printed in two colour and am quite happy with the result seen as a I had to register it using very basic methods of transparencies to lay it up.
A little history - I brought the shirt from my supplier initially with no plan for it, I just liked the green and the fact that the colour was listed as 'kelly green' just sealed the deal. My first thought was to do a st patricks day shirt as it was around that time of year but I flagged that when I saw a person wearing such a shirt on the street that was a little too close to my idea (had probably seen it somewhere before). To cut a long story short I had this 3D text sketch in my notebook of the word envy and decided to devolop it and see how it came out.
I Am now planning to turn this into a series using the seven deadly sins and the seven virtues as the central theme, each with thier own typographic and colour responses. Any ideas/comments appreciated.

Some work to come
I make apromise now to have some work up within the week, hell if imake this statement online i might just actually chase myself up.
A grimm affair is closed
I started another blog at the end of last year under the old name of A Grimm Affair which is now out dated but still has a place in my work for what it encapsulates, that blog was still up with its one original post sitting on it and upon starting the Grimm and Tonic blog I saw fir to remove the old as its was geared basically towards the same things. Anyway below is the original introduction I wrote for the old blog which will give you an idea about things you will find here in the near future.
Introduction
Ok here I am, I've decided to join everyone else that has gone before me and start a blog. I have just completed my third year (now in my fourth year) doing a bachelor of design at Unitec and decided I need somewhere to compile my views on various matters that are relevant to myself and my peers, and also to talk about things happening in the industry that interest me. I'll most likely also put up some of my work to share and talk about.
Now why a blog? I am working on a website for myself to act as an online portfolio etc at the moment but its going to be a little while off from getting it launched so this is an easy way to get started and warm up to my website. Also being able to share my views with people online I may be able to get some feedback from others and their views on the matter rather than just a one minded view. Its always good to hear what others opinions are, as often ideas are put forward that one hadn't thought of.

Grimm and Tonic is now blogging
Hi to all
Welcome to the Grimm and Tonic and the first post of said blog. First of all, a short history. Grimm and Tonic is the name I am currently developing and branding for my personal identity. I should mention here that I am in my last year of a design degree majoring in media design.
The name came about in two parts, Grimm has been around for a little over a year now, my work was heavily influenced by my research into fairy tales and the use of silhouette which naturally incurred the name of Grimm (I have a habit of catogorising bodies of work by naming them) and developed into an identity for me. The Tonic part was attached at the start of this year when I was looking to brand a series of t-shirts, the thought process being a simple case of whittling out ideas such as G&T (the t standing for t-shirt) this also just happened to be the short name of one of my favourite mixes which I admittedly liked in a stupid way, anyway this eventually expanded to Grimm and Tonic. As my work as started to change and bring in different styles Tonic has become a name that describes the mix of styles as they develop.
